Founded by Baptists in Marion, Alabama in 1841 as Howard College, today Samford University is the largest privately supported university in the state. Moving to Birmingham in 1887, the institution was renamed Samford University in 1965, reorganizing to accommodate Cumberland School of Law. In addition, the university is presently composed of the McWhorter School of Pharmacy, Howard College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, Beeson School of Divinity, Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies, School of Performing Arts, and Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing. Distinguished by its buildings of Georgian-Colonial architecture on 180 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, Samford serves as the learning environment and community for more than 4500 students each year. Home to more than 116 academic and social organizations, such as intramural sports, music and drama groups, students also participate in greater Birmingham community projects, such as Habitat for Humanity and Birmingham Connections. Samford competes in 17 intercollegiate sports for men and women at the NCAA Division I level. At the University’s core is a foundation of Christian values and belief, a mission to nurture persons for God, for learning, forever that has withstood the test of time. As a relatively complex institution for its modest size, Samford aims to have particular influence on the values and character formation of its students. |

Samford University provides academic studies in 26 degree programs in more than 70 majors in the Howard College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, Beeson School of Divinity, Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies, Cumberland School of Law, School of Performing Arts, Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, and McWhorter School of Pharmacy. With an average of 25-30 students in most classes, professors have an opportunity to know their students and to serve as mentors. No students are taught by graduate assistants. Co-nexus, Samford’s innovative twenty-first century curriculum, allows students to learn of the interconnectedness of the arts and humanities, and to develop the ability to think critically, speak articulately, and reason intelligently. Five continents host Samford academic programs: North America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Students may live and study at Samford’s Daniel House, located in the heart of London’s famous West End. A state-of-the-art scientific complex, The Sciencenter, features a planetarium and botanical conservatory for medicinal plants and numerous laboratories for hands-on scientific research. Samford is consistently identified as one of America’s “best buys.” U. S. News & World Report ranks the university fifth among 130 regional universities in the South for 2002. The university is included in the 2002 edition of The Princeton Review Guide to Best 331 Colleges and selected annually for Peterson’s Competitive Colleges. The Templeton Guide: Colleges that Encourage Character Development selected and recognized Samford for excellence among 60 college first-year programs and among 40 college Civic Education programs. |
